No one wants the stubborn fat around the belly area. We all want to get rid of the belly fat and have a flat stomach. But, recent study has confirmed that belly fat is not just an aesthetic problem for the people. It can cause serious health problems, even for people with normal weight. Excess fat around your belly increases the chances of premature death, even for people who are not overweight.
Belly Fat: A Danger to Your Health – Even at a NORMAL WEIGHT!
A group of researchers has published an article on November 10, in the Annals of the journal Internal Medicine about this condition. According to them, people with normal weight with belly fat had greater risk of disease and death compared to overweight people.
Dr. Paul Poirier, one of the most influential physicians at the University of Quebec, Canada, says that abdominal fat is bad fat. That stubborn fat tissue around our waistline has been linked to many diseases, such as: diabetes, stroke, heart disease, inflammation and high cholesterol. He says that having a fat around your belly is much worse than having fat around your hips.
Poirier also says that having belly fat is very bad for the heart, even though you are a normal weight person. Even if your weight measurements are normal, above 34 inches for women and 40 inches for men is obesity. Poirier explains that these people are obese from a belly perspective, not from a weight perspective. According to Dr. Poirier, central obesity is the most dangerous.
Dr. Francisco López, a professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic, organized a study to compare the risk of premature death among 15,000 adults. He compared the Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist-hip ratio-ratios in the 15,000 subjects. Dr. Francisco López discovered that, regardless of body mass index, the worst long-term survival had normal weight adults with extra belly fat.
However, men who had a normal weight but a large stomach seemed to be worse off than the skinny women with more fat around their belly. Men with normal weight, with more abdominal fat had an 87% higher risk of death, compared to men who were normal weight and no belly fat. This study revealed that people with more abdominal fat have more than twice the risk of dying prematurely.
Women who had normal weight with belly fat compared to women with normal weight without belly fat had a 50% higher risk of premature death. Researchers have found that women with normal weight and excess fat around their waist had a 32% higher risk of premature death. Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale University Prevention Research Center, explained that this condition can lead to fat accumulation in the liver.
